The chapter begins by describing the physical decline of David. He was getting old. His physical strength was fading and his ability to hold authority over the kingdom was also waning. His subjects brought a young woman named Abishag to care for him and keep him warm. (they had no relations).
David’s son Adonijah started to proclaim himself king. This was not in God’s plan as Solomon was destined for the throne. Nathan the prophet confronts David and a plan to make things right is enacted.

David prepares Solomon to rule in his stead. He admonished Solomon to take heed to serve God and keep the law of Moses.
There are still active threats to the kingdom that Solomon must put to rest and a hit list of men that must face a reckoning. Solomon addresses his father David’s concerns, exacts justice on these men, and establishes full control the kingdom.
